The barber’s trade has a long history: razors have been found since the Bronze Age (3500 BC) in Egypt. And in ancient Rome, hairdressers were a respected place to meet and exchange news and gossip, just like today. In medieval times, barbers also performed surgeries, bloodletting, and dentistry. In fact, the appearance of the traditional barber pole, red, white and blue, is related to bleeding, with red representing blood and white the bandages used to bleed. In Europe, barber poles are usually red and white and in the United States they are usually red, white, and blue. Some suggest that the color blue was added in the United States as a nod to the American flag.
Today barbershops have maintained their position as a place where men can meet and have open debates and engage in discussion on contemporary and local issues. Barbers are not just a shop, where men get shaves and haircuts, but also a place for male social interaction, especially in the black community.
